Fascinating exhibition in Paris about “Gaston Febus”, an iconic 14^th century figure

The exhibition has been organised by the Musée de Cluny, Bibliothèque Nationale de France and Musée National du Château de Pau (where it will be displayed between March and June) and tells the story of Gaston Fébus’ life and work.

Not only was he Count of Foix but he was also a successful poet and writer! He wrote the famous Livre de chasse, an illustrated manuscript about fox hunting which was used as a reference book for the animal world for several centuries.

He was also an excellent politician who knew how to make the most out of the eternal conflict between the French and English monarchies to claim Béarn’s autonomy.

Did you know that Foix and Orthez still use the Occitan motto of Febus : Tòca-i se gausas which translates as “Touch if you dare“?

Mur des Je t’aime, iconic location for loving couples in Paris

Throughout the year and especially in the run-up to Valentine’s Day, lovers from all over the world come for a walk and to have a photo taken in front of this imaginative piece whose message is both peaceful and unifying.

Its creator, Frédéric Baron, spent a long time collecting translations of “I love you” in over 300 languages to create a wall of hundreds of enamelled lava tiles with the universal phrase engraved on them in Basque, Kyrgyz and even Reunionese Creole.

With the help of the calligrapher Claire Kito, Baron’s idea was to erect a wall which, unlike other walls, unites people rather than separates them. In the face of world violence and hardship, the one of a kind wall has become an iconic location for loving couples.

The Paris Agricultural Show, a major event not to be missed!

More than 600 000 visitors are expected for this 2012 show often presented as the biggest farm in France. And for good reason!

This huge event aimed at all those who appreciate the land and its produce will once again offer numerous activities and special features.

With a new village devoted to pets, animals take centre stage during this major event. A completely new area is dedicated to agricultural professions.

Gastronomy and viticulture are also showcased and will present their best labels and vintages.

In total, 8 different visits have been designed aimed at children, those in a hurry, food lovers and those keen to sample some novelties. The show has something for everyone, guaranteeing visitors a truly unique experience.

These exquisite exhibits, objects of pride as well as desire, are brought together here in one of the biggest collections of its type: bonbonnières, patch boxes, snuffboxes, etuis and toiletry items illustrate the fashions as well as the customs in terms of parlour games, cosmetics and snuff.

Their manufacture and notably the choice of materials used (ivory, enamel, porcelain, gold, jade, agate or other gemstones) are explained in detail as are the techniques employed for their creation – including silversmithing, jewellery making, engraving and sculpture.

The talented artists who designed them were also inspired to endow these everyday objects with some rather surprising shapes such as a camel, a head or a cello… With the help of engravings and paintings, the detailed descriptions of their use are highly informative and make for a fascinating exhibition!

Shivers guaranteed!

Sunday skaters, eternal beginners and the kings of the ice rink: everyone will meet in front of the Hôtel de Ville of Paris until the month of March for lots of fun and entertainment.

Those lacking in confidence, once fitted with skates, can seek wise advice from the qualified instructors. For those who are natural born skaters, the entire 1635m² of the ice rink awaits them.

Thanks to a rink which has been specially created for them, children under 6 can go on their first skate in total safety. Classes are also available to novices on Saturday and Sunday mornings. As for those who prefer admiring from behind the barrier than taking part, can come and watch the different demonstrations which have been lined up.

Curling, ice dancing and hockey, all the disciplines of the ice rink will be represented in demonstrations that are as instructive as they are spectacular!
