If the Galeries Lafayette are internationally famous, do you know the history of this Parisian department store?
The history of the Galeries Lafayette began in 1895 when Theophile Bader and Alphonse Kahn opened a dry goods store and their first fashion clothing workshops. Ideally located near the Opera Garnier, the Grands Boulevards and the Gare St.-Lazare, this new store is in the 9th district of Paris, at the corner of Lafayette Street and Chaussée d’Antin.
It quickly gained notoriety with the small and medium bourgeoisie, but also people with modest means. The success was there, the Galeries have been expanded very quickly with the acquisition and management of new spaces. It’s late 1912 that the new store is opened. Five floors, balconies, a huge and magnificent dome made of stained glass by Louis Majorelle, who also created the banister, but also a hairdressing salon, a tea room … a terrace at the top of the building with a beautiful view over the city and the new Eiffel Tower, and the store windows to encourage all the needs of customers!
The Galeries Lafayette welcomes their customers in a sumptuous department store, with its 96 aisles of novelties and fashionable products. Progressively the offer was diversified with the menswear, furniture, toys, tableware. The success continues.
In 1969 a new store is built across the street Mogador, it will be entirely dedicated to men’s fashion. The Galeries Lafayette each season make new talent known, and spaces will be allocated to them: Daniel Hechter, Pierre Cardin, Cacharel and Yves Saint Laurent and many more…
In 1975, the Galeries Lafayette has a sales area of 47,800 sq ft! The company occupies the 1st place of French department stores. His progress has not stopped, the customers are French and foreigners from all countries.
